Panel replacement

Garage door panel replacement in Austin: when one section fixes it and when it only hides the bill

A bumper, a basketball, a backed-up trailer or a hailstorm, and now one section of the door looks like it lost a fight. Sometimes a single panel sets it right for a few hundred dollars. Sometimes the model has been out of production for a decade and the honest answer is a new door. We find out which before you spend anything.

A sectional garage door is four or five horizontal panels, called sections, hinged together and riding on rollers. Damage to one section does not have to mean replacing the whole door, provided three things line up: the section is still manufactured, the rest of the door is in good shape, and the damage has not bent the track or racked the frame. The common case in Austin is the bottom section, because that is the one a car reaches first. The second most common is the top section, which takes the strain of the opener arm and cracks around the bracket on lightweight doors. Hail does the rest, and after a Central Texas hailstorm we see doors where every section is dimpled but the door works perfectly, which is a cosmetic decision rather than a repair.

The question we answer first is whether the section can be matched. Steel sectional doors are made in families, and a manufacturer keeps a given profile, embossing pattern and colour in production for a run of years before changing it. A door from the last eight or ten years is usually matchable from the maker's current catalogue, sometimes with a slight colour difference that weathers to nothing within a season on a sun-facing door. A door from the late 1990s or earlier is often an orphan: the pattern is gone, the colour is gone, and the closest match is a section that looks like a patch. We check the manufacturer label on the end stile and the inside of a section, and we tell you honestly which bucket your door is in.

Then the arithmetic. A single replacement section, delivered and installed, runs a few hundred dollars. A new insulated steel door for a two-car opening, installed, runs two to three and a half thousand. If your door is twelve years old, uninsulated, and needs one bottom section, the panel is the right buy. If it is twenty-two years old, the springs are due, the rollers are steel and howling, and the top section is cracked too, then a new section is money spent on a door you will replace in two years anyway. We put both numbers on the sheet and let you choose.

One more point that matters in a city of summer heat. Insulated sections are a sandwich of steel skin, foam core and steel back, and they hold their shape; a single-skin section dents from a tossed ball and oil-cans in the afternoon sun. When we replace a section on an insulated door we match the insulation so the door stays balanced, because a heavier or lighter section changes the weight the springs were wound for, and an unbalanced door chews through its opener. Replacing one section on a non-insulated door with an insulated one is possible but means rebalancing the springs, and we price that honestly rather than leaving it out.

What the visit covers

Match checked before quoting

Manufacturer, model, profile and colour read off the labels; you hear whether a true match exists before any money is discussed.

Bottom and top sections most often

The two sections cars and openers damage, kept in common sizes and ordered in a few days for the rest.

Track and frame inspected

A hit hard enough to dent a section often bends the vertical track or the jamb bracket, and that is checked and priced at the same time.

Weight kept balanced

Insulation matched to the rest of the door so the springs stay right and the opener is not overloaded.

Hail assessed honestly

A dimpled door that runs fine is a cosmetic choice; we say so and let you decide, with the insurance paperwork if you want it.

New-door number alongside

The replacement-door price goes on the same sheet so a thirty-year-old door does not get a two-hundred-dollar patch.

Questions about panel replacement

A car backed into the door. Can one panel be replaced?

If the section is still made and the track survived, yes. We check the model label, measure the track for bends, and quote the section. If the track is bent or the frame racked, that gets fixed first or the new section will not run true.

How do I know if my door's panels are still made?

The end stile or the inside of a section carries the manufacturer and model. We look it up against the maker's current catalogue on the spot. Doors under about ten years old usually match; older ones often do not.

Will the new section match the colour?

Close, on a current model. Paint fades in Texas sun, so a new white section next to a fifteen-year-old white one shows for a few months and then evens out. On a discontinued colour we show you the nearest match and let you decide.

Should I replace the panel or the whole door?

If the door is under about fifteen years old, insulated, and otherwise sound, replace the panel. If it is older, uninsulated, loud, or needs springs and rollers too, the money is better spent on a new door. Both prices go on your sheet.

Does hail damage mean I need new panels?

Only if a section is cracked, split or no longer seals. Dents alone are cosmetic. If you are claiming on insurance, we can document the damage and price a full replacement for the adjuster.

Can you replace a wood panel?

On a true wood sectional door, individual sections can be rebuilt by a carpenter, and we will say when that is the better route. Most wood-look doors in Austin are steel or composite, and those sections we replace like any other.

Door won't budge? Spring let go? Opener gone quiet?

A technician can usually be on your driveway today anywhere from Georgetown down to Dripping Springs and out to Bastrop. You hear the price first, and a quote on a new door or opener costs nothing.
